Harnas Wildlife Foundation is a place where man and nature get a brief window in time to unify. We can plan, we can calculate and we can rely on experience, but no matter how adept we get with our current environment, we never really know what could come next.

Accommodation

Harnas offers you comfortable accommodation, fine cuisine at our rustic restaurant

and sun-kissed moments with the best nature has to offer.

Activities

Morning Tour: Starts: 09:00-12:00

The Harnas team would like to invite you to join us for a morning coffee with the lions. During this tour you will get to experience the Wildlife Welfare World of Harnas, where certain enclosures have been constructed to hold new arrivals sick or injured animals and animals that cannot be rehabilitated and released. You will witness the care given to these animals so to ensure they are having a good second chance in life. You will go with us on a guided tour, through the kingdom of lions, cheetahs, baboons, wild dogs, leopards and caracals; get to hear all the information and stories of our animals.

You will be driven in one of our open safari vehicles and be able to relax and experience our amazing Namibian wildlife up close and personal. Watch a lion feeding just a few feet away, hear the amazing sounds and see the behaviour of the endangered wild dog. You will see the graceful cheetah and laugh at the antics of the baboon clan. Witness our tour guides serving breakfast to these spectacular animals.

Afternoon Tour: Starts strictly at 15:00- 16:30 Winter/ 15:30 -17:00 Summer

If you want to experience the spectacular African wildlife and see animals interact in their real natural habitat, then you should join us on the afternoon tour. You will experience Harnas on a more personal level, learn about our history, visit our nursery and care facility and understand the heartbeat of Harnas. Your guide will accompany you to view the amazing animals such as the Nile crocodile, brown hyena, vervet monkeys, mongoose, caracals and many more Harnas sightings. Pay a visit to the Volunteer village and our own church built in memory of Marieta's late husband and son.

Lion Roar Sundowner:

Hear the thrilling sound of the lions roaring and competing for the loudest and strongest position on Harnas while enjoying a delicious sundowner!

It is the lion's roar, answered first from one direction and then another, increasing in degree until you can feel the vibrations in your chest. Each roar is beating to the rhythm of your heart. When the lions' calls have reached their peak, they begin to wane, until the sounds are mere growls expelled with each deep animal breath. In and out, in and out, the growls lessen, and then there is stillness. Territory has been established for the moment--as it will be again at sunset and at tomorrow's sunrise and each day after. Radio tracking in the Lifeline:

Help with the adventurous search of a released cheetah or wild dog carrying a radio collar in our Lifeline.

Tracking our animal movements and watching behaviour patterns or searching for signals is done on radio transmitter frequencies using a receiver and an antenna. Radio telemetry uses a series of signals that are signalled from the transmitter to the antenna.

Night drive:

Night drive safaris are essentially game drives that operate after dark, with the assistance of a spotlight. The primary advantage of night drives is that they provide access to nocturnal species that are rarely seen during the day, such as porcupines, genets, brown hyena, nocturnal birds such as the nightjar, scorpions, reptile life and the very elusive aardvark. There is also something primeval about stopping somewhere in the bush, switching off the motor and listening to the sounds of the night whilst contemplating the stars of the African night.

Nature walk and tracking:

Feel Africa underfoot on a guided bush walk. The experience offers an intimate encounter with nature and wildlife, and medicinal and other plants are identified en route.

Your guide will also teach you to track wildlife in the traditional way, using animal footprints and scat.

Bird watching:

Bird life at Harnas is rich and plentiful, with a large number of species to be seen including a number of birds of prey and other bird species both endemic to Namibia and migratory. Bird watching is a popular activity in this area, so make sure you bring a pair of binoculars.
